The Summerhaven Entomology Center is designed to provide a space for visitors to observe and learn about the insects that walk the Earth alongside us. The site is immersed within the Coronado National Forest, just beyond the Mt. Lemmon General store and lodge. The design of the structure seeks to create a translation between the architectural design and the beautiful natural environment that surrounds it. A ramp from the entrance leads down to the reception desk, which is also connected to the indoor multi-use space. A ramp then leads down to the main courtyard, which is located in the center of the upper floor and has a plethora of vegetation that enables insects to engage with visitors. This space acts as the heart of the design, as every other aspect of the program branches off from this area. Another ramp extends from the courtyard and weaves through the pines trees and offers many different options for visitors to rest and enjoy the sound of the aspen trees flowing in the wind. This connection between nature and architectural design is a key component that allows visitors to establish a deeper understanding of entomology.
